Capcom's first Marvel-themed fighting game was X-Men: Children of the Atom, which was released in 1994 and introduced a lot of gameplay elements that would transition to Marvel vs Capcom in the future. While certain elements of the game, including Marvel vs Capcom Infinite's Infinity Stones system, have found support among some of the fanbase since launch, the decision to remove the X-Men is still a sore spot for many fans. But many of the complaints were leveled at the roster, which featured notable absences from longtime Marvel vs Capcom mainstays, especially among the X-Men. These included the reduction from three fighters per team to two fighters per team, as well as the new Infinity Stone system. Some complained that the new art style felt clunky and outdated, and lacked the charm of the original games', while others expressed frustration with some of the new gameplay changes. There were several factors that led to longtime fans of the series feeling underwhelmed by the most recent entry. Many considered Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite to be one of the more disappointing games of 2017. Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite infamously dropped the X-Men from its roster, but a potential Marvel vs Capcom 5 could fix the mistake of its predecessor and bring back Marvel's mutants in a big way.
